The history

Gia Vien is a district located at the northern gateway of Ninh Binh province, about 20 km from Ninh Binh city center. According to historical documents, the Gia Vien district was established by the Dinh dynasty in 968 with the first name Nhu Vien.

Gia Vien is an ancient land steeped in history. This is the birthplace of the first king in Vietnamese feudal history, King Dinh Tien Hoang. He was the king associated with heroic and meaningful historical chapters of the Vietnamese people. Furthermore, Gia Vien has the mark of the Dinh dynasty’s four great generals: Prime Minister Nguyen Bac, Foreign Minister Dinh Dien, Minister Trinh Tu, and Grand Master Luu Co.

Besides, this historical land is also the hometown of Zen Master Nguyen Minh Khong, who made many great contributions to the country at that time. He was not only a monk who headed the Buddhist organization of the Ly dynasty but also the Zen master who founded the most pagodas in Vietnamese history. Local people revered him as Saint Nguyen.

Gia Vien is a precious piece in the picture of Ninh Binh history in particular and Vietnam history in general. Outstanding historical events and legendary people in this land have contributed to nurturing and preserving the treasured cultural and religious values of the Vietnamese people.
